    DESCRIPTION

Duke is one of the most reliable and widely planted blueberries in the country, and for good reason. It ripens early in the season, producing large, firm, light blue berries with a clean, mild sweetness and a satisfying crunch that holds up well both fresh and for preserving. The flavor is approachable and crowd-pleasing — not overly tart, not cloying — and the consistent berry size and firm texture make it a favorite for fresh eating straight off the bush.

As a plant, Duke is as dependable as they come. It sets heavy crops reliably year after year, handles a range of soil conditions better than many highbush varieties, and has shown good tolerance for late spring frosts that can damage or eliminate the crop on less resilient cultivars. Upright and tidy in habit, it fits naturally into the edible landscape and is attractive enough in flower and fall foliage to earn its place in an ornamental border as well. Plant with another early-ripening variety nearby for the best cross-pollination and maximum yield.

    Highlights:

    • Large, firm, mild-flavored berries — excellent for fresh eating, freezing, and preserving
    • One of the earliest ripening highbush blueberries — harvest begins mid to late June
    • Heavy, consistent annual crops
    • Good tolerance for late spring frosts — reliable even in variable climates
    • Attractive white spring flowers and rich red-orange fall foliage
    • Upright, tidy habit works well in edible and ornamental landscapes alike
    • Self-fertile but yields significantly improve with a pollination partner nearby
