Planting Instructions
*** When your plants arrive, remove them from the box immediately and water thouroughly, even if you cannot plant them right away ***
PLAN
When choosing the location for your plants, keep in mind the plant's light requirements as well as soil and watering needs.
Sun: When planting full-sun plants, choose a spot that receives at least 6 hours of sunlight a day. For plants that prefer partial shade, a location that receives a few hours of direct sun or filtered sun all day is ideal.
Soil: Most plants prefer moist but well drained soil (be sure to check individual plant requirements though). Poor draining soil can leave the plant sitting in soggy conditions and can rot the roots.
How to test soil drainage:
- - Dig a 2 foot deep hole, fill it with water, and let it drain.
- - Fill the hole with water again. If the water completely drains in a few hours, the drainage is good. If it remains for 12 hours or longer, the soil drains poorly.
- - If the soil has poor drainage, try working organic matter into the soil to improve the drainage, or grow plants suited for moist areas.
PLANT
1. DIG A HOLE
The hole should be as deep and twice as wide as the rootball of the plant. Leave a plateau of firm soil 1 to 2 inches tall in the bottom center of the hole.
2. SET THE PLANT IN THE HOLE
Place the rootball and soil of the plant on the plateau in the bottom of the hole. The top of the rootball should be 1 to 2 inces above the surrounding soil. Fill the hole with the soil you dug from the hole. Form the soil around the roots with your hands and fill the hole to make it level with the ground.
3. WATER AND MULCH
Gently water the plant. Then spread mulch around the plant, but keep it several inches away from the stem
